Clifford Pearson,
Deputy editor of
Architectural Record

Clfford Pearson is a deputy editor of Architectural Record. Since joining the magazine in 1989, he has written on a broad range of topics—from individual projects such as the MAXXI museum in Rome by Zaha Hadid and the Hong Kong International Airport by Foster & Partners to essays on school design and housing. From 1993 to 1997, he edited Record’s annual section on architecture in the Pacific Rim and today he is in charge of the magazine’s Chinese edition and its annual Design Vanguard issue. He is the author of Indonesia: Design and Culture, published by the Monacelli Press in 1998, and the editor of Modern American Houses, published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., in 1996 and reissued in 2005. In 2003, he received a Media Fellowship from the U.S.-Japan Foundation and spent two months in Japan examining “Technology and Tradition in Contemporary Japanese Architecture.” Mr. Pearson holds a master’s degree in architectural history from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in urban studies from Cornell University.

Leon van Schaik,

Leon van Schaik AO LFAIA,RIBA, PhD, is Professor of Architecture (Innovation Chair) at RMIT, from which base he has promoted local and international architectural culture through design practice research and through advising on the commissioning of architects. His writings include monographs on the work of Edmond and Corrigan, Ushida Findlay, Guilford Bell, Tom Kovac, Sean Godsell, John Wardle, and Denton Corker Marshall. His other books include Poetics in Architecture (Academy Press, 2002), The Practice of Practice (RMIT University Press, 2003), Mastering Architecture (Academy Press, 2005), Design City Melbourne (Wiley, 2008), Spatial Intelligence (Wiley, 2005, 2006, 2008), and with Geoffrey London and Beth George, Procuring Innovative Architecture (Routledge 2010).

Ken Yeang,

Dr. Ken Yeang is an architect-planner, ecologist, and author who is best known for his signature and innovative green buildings and master plans. He is regarded as one of the foremost designers and noted authorities on ecologically responsive architecture and planning. He has authored several books on ecological design and tall building design. His latest is, Ecodesign: Manual for Ecological Design, published by John Wiley & Sons (UK). He has pioneered the passive low-energy design of tall buildings, which he calls the ‘bioclimatic skyscraper’. He has received numerous awards for his work and designs that include the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, the RAIA International Award, the Prinz Claus Award, and the UIA August Perret Award. His key built works include the Menara Mesiniaga tower (Malaysia), the National Library (Singapore) and the Great Ormond Street Hospital Extension (UK). He is an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, past Chairman of ARCASIA and has served on the Royal Institute of Architects Council. He is the distinguished Plym Professor at the University of Illinois, and Adjunct Professors at the University of Hawaii and University of Malaya. He is a principal of the UK architect and planning firm, Llewelyn Davies Yeang and its sister company, Hamzah & Yeang (Malaysia).
