Richard Hassell is a co-founding director (with Wong Mun Summ) of WOHA, a regional design practice based in Singapore. WOHA explores integrated design for the built environment. Rather than develop a house style, the firm focuses on the architectural potentials within each project and develops a formal language around these. WOHA works in a broad range of building types, including hospitality, residential, transport, educational, cultural and commercial. The practice has an international staff from all corners of the globe.

WOHA has received numerous international awards for excellence in design including 2 World Building Titles at the 2009 World Architecture Festival, the 2008 International Award for Architecture from The Australian Institute of Architects, 2007 Emporis Silver Award for highrise buildings, 2007 Aga Khan Award for Architecture and 2007 MIPIM AR Future Project Awards. WOHA’s first monograph, illustrating the work of the first 15 years of the practice was published by Pesaro Publishing in 2009.

Richard Hassell has lectured, examined and held adjunct professorships at a variety of educational institutions in the US, UK, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Richard Hassell is currently a Board Member of the DesignSingapore Council and the Building and Construction Authority, Singapore, and has served on committees with the Singapore Board of Architects and the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore.

Richard Hassell graduated in 1989 from UWA in Perth, Australia and worked at Kerry Hill Architects in Singapore from 1989 to 1995, becoming an associate in 1992. He was invited to the Masters by Practice program at RMIT University in 2000, and was awarded a Masters degree in 2002.
